Filming orientation flights!

When young bees first leave the hive and take flight, they learn the location of the nest relative to landmarks by performing an orientation flight. I filmed the video above using a frame rate of 240 fps which is approximately the flapping frequency of honeybees. This results in an aliasing effect that makes the bees look like they are swimming slowly through the air. In reality, they are flapping imperceptibly fast.
